Chester Historical Society Wants to Hire a Museum & Outreach Assistant
Part-time position: Estimated time commitment of 20 hours per week
Job Summary:
The Chester Historical Society seeks a passionate and dynamic part-time Museum & Outreach Assistant to support museum operations and marketing efforts, and visitor engagement. This role is responsible for advancing the Society’s mission to preserve, interpret, and promote the history and heritage of Chester. This individual will work closely with the Board of Directors, volunteers, and the community to ensure the Society’s success through program coordination, visitor experiences, and community outreach. This position allows for a combination of work-from-home activities and onsite responsibilities, with occasional evening and weekend time for special events, programs and meetings.
Duties & Responsibilities:
· Oversee museum visitor services, ensuring a welcoming and informative experience for guests.
· Assist with tours, public programs, committee projects, and events that engage visitors with the history and collections of the Society.
· Participate/assist in the recruitment, training, and management of museum hosts/volunteers. Coordinate the hosting schedule.
· Maintain a data system of visitor demographics, attendance, and feedback to improve visitor engagement and program offerings.
· Oversee museum building operations, including supervising cleaning and landscaping personnel and maintaining supplies.
· Assist with developing marketing and promotional materials - such as social media, flyers and press releases - to attract visitors to events and exhibitions.
· Perform general administrative duties effectively, managing the Society’s correspondences, including answering emails, phone calls, and booking group tours.
· Work with the Board and volunteers to create and implement outreach initiatives that increase the Society’s visibility and community engagement.
· Attend board meetings and committee meetings as necessary.
Our ideal candidate will:
· Have experience with/passion for history, museum studies, nonprofit management, marketing, or a related field.
· Have experience with marketing, social media, and website management.
· Demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, including a friendly and helpful phone and email manner.
· Have the ability to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish goals.
· Work well with others and enjoy meeting new people and interacting with the public.
· Be a solution-oriented, efficient self-starter who is flexible and willing to pitch in when needed.
